Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 is the next evolution of the cornerstone Microsoft server suite for small businesses. SBS2011 has taken all the goodness of SBS2008 and tweaked everything to make a great package even better!
SBS2011 is built upon the rock-solid foundation of Server 2008 R2 and then adds in Exchange 2010, SharePoint Foundation 2010, WSUS (for update management) and a number of other essential services. The new “SBS 2011 Premium Add-On” gives you an additional Server 2008 R2 license as well as a SQLserver 2008 R2 Workgroup license allowing you to provide a full SQLserver backend for SharePoint as well as your Line-of-Business applications. And, even better, because the Premium components are now an “add-on” you can start with SBS2011 Standard and add the Premium components at any time, as they become required. This is a big improvement over past versions of SBS where you needed to choose which version you wanted up front.
Other improvements to SBS2011 include the new Remote Web Access which is an expanded version of the older Remote Web Workplace that shipped with SBS2003 and SBS2008. RWA consolidates access to Exchange Webmail (Outlook Web Access), the internal SharePoint site, RDP access to internal server(s) and desktops and access to shared file folders in one secure website that is hosted by the SBS server.
SBS2011 is suitable for any organization of 75 seats or less that requires a solid, reliable platform for hosting line-of-business applications as well as world-class email and collaboration abilities and easy remote access tools.
A word about migration: Microsoft has made it possible with SBS2011to migrate from an existing SBS2003/SBS2011 installation as well as “standalone” Server2003/2008 installations.
